Things Fall Apart

I am going to use the postcolonialism theory for my essay Things Fall Apart. I feel that I want to write how the people who colonized in Africa, how they took control over the natives. I want to be able to write how the colonial people failed to see the natives in their perspective, and how they were trying to force them to do it their ways. How they were trying to force them to believe in their faith. I want to write about the natives struggles of conforming into a different culture and traditions. The struggle of being forced to think differently, to be forced to think like the colonial people.

The colonist ideology was "that all races other than white were inferior or subhuman"(236). This show how ignorant and prideful the colonists were. They believed they could just come into the natives land and bend the natives will to think and act like them. To change their culture and custom that they lived all their lives. In Things Fall Apart, they natives were stubborn and did not want to let go of their culture, they did not want to conform. Okonkwo is a great example of his stubbornness of not wanting to conform. Because of their stubbornness, the colonists have a tough time conforming the natives.

Technocracy Versus Technopoly

What is the difference in technocracy and technopoly? Based on Neil Postman's article, he describe technocracy as people becoming machines, that people are under the subjects of technology. Postman then tells that Technopoly is when people uses technology efficiently while we are not subjected to the ever  advancing technologies. When humanity starts to serve machines, they are in sense, losing humanity, they will lose the ability to feel emotion and to have agencies to choose. Postman describe in his article that we should stay away from technocracy and move towards technopoly instead. Postman argues that technopoly should "include the beliefs that the primary, if not the only, goal of human labor and thought is efficiency; that technical calculation is in all respects superior to human judgement." Postman says that human judgement is not perfect, and that human can not be trusted because of their tendency to be bias, and emotionally attached to things when making decisions. That is where Postman believes we should use the machines for greater efficiency and decision making.

In Brave New World, they lost their humanity to use machines to create greater efficiency. By using machines, the people in Brave New World lost their individuality in order to have greater efficiency. In their society, is based on efficiency, that the people only exist to create better machines to make things more efficient. For that reason, Postman is trying to move away from that society, so we can still have individuality, and still be efficient with technology.

Singularity

The article presents the idea that technology will keep on growing and will soon overtake human intelligences. In this article that Lev Grossman wrote about Ray Kerzweil's prediction of singularity, in other word, humanity will have to intertwine with the machines to keep up with technology. The idea of mixing with the machine is a crazy thought and is a new way of society.
The article is suggesting of giving away our humanity to machines. To give our lives to machines that will eventually be more intelligent than us. That we must soon become like the machines, to connect ourselves with the machines. The article suggest that we put our life, our emotion into the machine, which will eventually become way smarter than us. The machines will then decide what to do with our life, and it will decide wether we need our emotion or not, wether it is efficient or not. People are becoming like robots, they all work for one thing, which is to work for further advancement. If we are not careful "maybe the computers will turn on humanity and annihilate us." The article pretty much is stating that if we are not careful the machines will take over.
In Brave New World, it is a good way to compare to the article. In Brave New World it tells how humanity works for technological advancement. That that is all they work for. There is no individuality, that they work for society, to work to make better and smarter machines. They are losing humanity, they only exist to further machine's advancement. People are becoming like robots, they work only for one thing, to work to further machine's intelligences. They claim that it is best for society. In sense, by progressing in technology, we are losing individuality and humanity.

Lord of the Rings

The author main point in writing this article about Lord of the Ring is to tell of the many analyze the book, and the author real purpose to writing the article is to talk how the book was related to biblical teaching.  The author article is an analysis of how J.R.R. Tolkien used Christianity and his belief into the book.  The author intended to write this article to those that are religious and enjoy reading books that have some relation to their beliefs.  By knowing her audience the author was able to use emotional and logical appeals to persuade her audience.  She knows that her audience will be religious so she appeals to their emotion; also she gives some facts on J.R.R. Tolkien in order to give some proof.
The author is trying to prove that Tolkien is trying to relate the book to the bible by using his characters to fight the temptation of evil just like it is in the Bible.  By arguing that, the author is able to achieve her goal in capturing her audience. To be able to use the emotional appeal, the writer brings the religious belief to the readers. She is able to use the bible and the book to have a connection; by saying there are temptation from evil to good.  The author is trying to prove the book is religious in a way, that that was how Tolkien meant to write it, to bring people to their senses and that there are temptation out their.
The writer began right at the beginning of her article and used emotional appeal, by using religion, and then she later uses facts to support her statements. She uses history, background information to back up her emotional appeals statements. In order for her to do this effectively she would have to transition well, which she did very well, she was able to tie the emotional and logical appeal together very nicely. By doing this she is able to make this article very effective and captivating to the readers.  She is able to unify them together to make the article fluently unified and transitioning well.
The writer was able to make this a good article by including texts from the bible and from Tolkien’s book in order to relate religious views. She is able to expand on the subject of how both the bible and Lord of the Ring both have temptation and she was able to thoroughly expound on that subject, and is able to convey the meaning and purpose of the article.
By reading this article, I have learned more fully on how to use emotional and logical appeal more effectively. The writer has indeed confound my expectation of rhetorical analysis by the way she uses the appeals in a certain way in order to obtain the readers attention and it showed when and where to use those appeals to make them more effective. By reading this it has not contradicted any rules or ways that I have been taught on rhetorical analysis, because the writer seem to follow the same rules. This article was a good example of a rhetorical analysis.
